Quality Of Life

Whether you are looking to buy a home or sell one,

what you are really looking to do is to find a quality of life that resonates true to you.

No matter if you are upgrading or down sizing. You are looking for something that fulfills your definition of quality.

When I have my initial meeting with a home buyer I ask the standard questions, just like every other agent out there. If you have ever seen any show aired on HGTV you know the ones I am talking about.

How many bedrooms?

How many bathrooms?

How many square feet?

Two stories, one, or split?

And of course, What’s the budget?

This is typically the point in the show where buyers and agents start looking at houses.

But for me this is the place I start asking my clients to describe their dream life. What do they desire to do; on a day to day basis? I ask them to paint a picture for me so I can understand what matters most to them in their lives.

About 6 years back our family was at a crossroads. Brett (my husband) was offered 3 different jobs at the exact same time.

Brett and I are what you might call unusual creatures. Growing up neither one of us ever had a dream to be in a certain line of work. We never desired to climb any ladder of any entity.

So when Brett was offered these 3 different positions, the question I asked Brett wasn’t which job do you desire more? It was which job gives us the quality of life we desire most?

One commodity that ranks high on the Pollard Tribe scale is: time together.

Job #1 Sent Brett away from our family for 4-5 days at a time. Home for 2 or 3 but then gone again.

Job #2 Required Brett to be at work as long as there was natural light to work by. In the summer taking him away before the kids woke up and coming home long after they were put to bed. But at least I would get to see him daily, and of course more time together in the winter season.

Job #3 Would be in the town we lived in. Brett would work 5am-3pm, 4 days a week. Giving us long weekends to make memories together and ample time in the afternoon and evenings together, The one downfall was that fiscally it performed the weakest.

After reviewing what mattered most to us. We did end up choosing  job # 3. Simply because it resonated with our top value of time together the most.

Applying this concept of narrowing in on  what you and your family value most, and integrating it into the process of looking for your next home. Eliminates a lot of the distraction. It helps you to sift out the homes that compromise your values. It also puts an end to defaulting to prioritizing,  measuring up to other peoples definition of life quality. Allowing you to consistently stay true to what really matters to you, and to the most important people in your life, your family.

One last note. Just like family grows and shifts throughout the years, so does the definition of our quality of life, so make sure you ask yourself the question….

In this season what kind of quality am I looking for in my life?
